A Fast Q&A
Q&A
Q: I thought if you eat fewer calories than you burn, you'll lose weight. But you don't recommend that?
A: Yes, you will lose weight. And yes, I don't recommend it. Why do you want to lose weight?
Them: To be healthier.
Me: So, that's two different things.
Them: How?
Me: If you are overweight and sick from eating too much stuff that makes you sick, and you become smaller by eating less stuff that makes you sick, you are still sick.
Them: But being a healthy weight reduces a bunch of diseases.
Me: There is no such thing as a "healthy weight." And weighing less won't protect you from anything but rejection at carnival rides.
Them: What?
Me: The UFO ride? They won't let you on that if you weigh too much or look generally like someone who will puke.
Them: ...
Me: Here's the reality. There's health, and there's weight. One is a state, and one is a number on the scale. That number reflects factors such as what you eat, how active you are, and the types of activities you engage in, among others. Weightlifters tend to be heavier than endurance runners, but neither is necessarily healthier than the other. Health & sickness are something that goes on inside of us, not just what is read by the number on the scale. In this way, health and weight are independent of each other. TLDR: Cancer does not care how much you weigh.
Brain Teaser (Teaser? I hardly know her) If a person with obesity doesn't smoke or drink, and a person at a "healthy weight" smokes and drinks, who is healthier?
Them: ...
Me: Exactly, health is inside of you. When you have it, the outside of you gets taken care of.
